Almond Heights Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q: What is "senior living"? How is it different than a nursing home?

A: Senior living communities (like Almond Heights) are similar to nursing homes in many ways. Both communities offer long-term care for older adults who need help. Senior living communities specialize in non-medical personal care (like assistance with a person's activities of daily living) and nursing homes primarily offer health care services. Nursing homes staff more registered nurses than an assisted living community or memory care unit and they are more technologically equipped to provide skilled nursing care.

Assisted living communities do not offer skilled nursing services, like catheter care or IV administration. Instead, they provide a safe, comfortable place for older adults to retire and enjoy luxury living as they receive personal care.

Q: How do I know if Almond Heights can meet my care needs (or my family member's)?

A: Each Almond Heights applicant works with a care adviser to do a pre-admission assessment before they move in. Pre-admission assessments help the staff understand each applicant's care needs better, helping them determine if the residence's long term care programs are the right fit. If a pre-admission assessment indicates that Almond Heights’ memory care unit or assisted living program are not suitable for an applicant's need, the care adviser can discuss alternative options with them to receive higher level care.

Q: Is Almond Heights Senior Living suitable for someone with dementia or Alzheimer's disease?

A: Living with Alzheimer's disease can be challenging for both the individual and their families. Finding an exceptional Alzheimer's care community can make an important difference in a person's life, giving them a second chance at retirement. Almond Heights is well-equipped to help residents with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and short-term memory loss, thanks to their premier memory care retirement residence. The community is designed specifically for people who need Alzheimer's care and the staff are experienced treating memory loss.

Alzheimer's care residents receive assistance with their daily living activities as they would in the assisted living program. The memory care community's caregivers tailor their treatments around memory loss, creating a nurturing environment for residents.

Q: Does Almond Heights offer short-term care programs?

A:  Absolutely! In addition to Almond Heights' long-term assisted living, independent living, and memory care services, older adults from throughout Orangevale are welcome to their respite care programs and adult day care services. Respite care and adult day care are exceptional alternatives to long-term care for older adults who receive care at-home. When their primary caregivers are away for any reason, they can schedule a stay at Almond Heights. Short-term residents are welcome to the same amenities as long-term community members and receive outstanding, compassionate care during their stay.

Q: Will my health insurance pay for Almond Heights?

A: Whether your health insurance will pay for Almond Heights depends on your health provider. Almond Heights is a community-based living facility, offering non-medical care. Some health care providers do not pay for non-medical care, but each plan is different. Medicaid recipients who receive a home and community-based services (HCBS) waiver may use their coverage to pay for Almond Heights, but interested applicants should speak with their case worker to learn more.

Prospective residents with long term care insurance may qualify for coverage, depending on their plan. Long term care insurance is widely available, and offers limitless benefits over private pay for senior living. Interested families should contact Almond Heights directly to learn more about their pay schedules, prices, and options for private pay residents.

Q: What social activities and community events does Almond Heights offer residents?

A: Almond Heights Senior Living and Memory Care believes staying active is the key to nurturing stronger seniors. In addition to their long term care programs, the residence offers a wide selection of fun amenities and events for residents.

The community sponsors free teaching events in the common rooms, where residents can listen to a lecture or take a class to learn a new skill. Residents can attend a community trivia game night, where they can answer questions about their favorite books, songs or TV series, or they can participate in a fitness class and learn a new chair yoga pose. The community's events rotate, including beanbag baseball outside during the warm months, and residents are invited to movie night regularly in the on-site theater.

When residents want to spent time alone enjoying an independent activity, they can request coloring books from the caregivers or the activities assistant and unwind with creative expression. They are also welcome to enjoy a crossword puzzle if beanbag baseball isn't their idea of fun, or enjoy their favorite TV series with a friend in one of the common rooms.

If residents feel under stimulated, they can speak with the activities assistant for help. The activities assistant guides residents in the right direction, helping them find fulfilling activities to fill their free time.

Q: Do I have to have a roommate when I live at Almond Heights? Can my spouse and I live in the same apartment?

A: Thanks to Almond Heights Senior Living and Memory Care's 11 floor plans, there are plenty of bedroom units to choose from. No one is required to have a roommate, although some residents choose to as a way to alleviate the cost of care. Residents have a choice of studio, one and two-bedroom units when they move in, giving them direct control over their living environment. Each apartment has private bedroom and private baths, making it suitable for residents who want to live alone or have a roommate.

Spouses are welcome to live together if it they are both suitable in the same care program. To learn more, contact Almond Heights directly and speak with the senior living community's care adviser.

R at 26 Nov 2018:
Everybody in management is so nice, efficient and very pleasant, we have no complaints, everything has been wonderful. The dining has been wonderful and I like all the activities and the outings, there are a lot of activities. The outings are fun and very interesting, we like it very much here. They clean everything and it's very pleasant, they do a great job. The landscaping is very nice and our room is overlooking the grass and the flowers, it's very well kept. The transportation services are great and the healthcare staff is very good, they're always prompt and efficient. I don't see any problems at all!

Elizabeth at 14 Nov 2018:
My mother wasn't happy with where she was and we wanted to move her closer to us, so I chose Almond Heights, which I really like a lot. Management is very nice and the front desk people are helpful, the food is fresh and from what I have seen, the activities are good. They have lots of music, different events and the decorations impressed me. Her room is kept clean and the grounds are nice, so I am impressed with the place. Overall, everything about the place has a lot more thought put into it for pleasing people and as soon as I saw it, I have been recommending it. There are some places here that awful, almost like an institution, and Almond Heights is not an institution. When she arrived, they had a sign saying Welcome which was very nice and thoughful.

Arnoldo at 14 Nov 2018:
It just had a great feeling when my dad and I got there for a tour. Everybody was very friendly and there was a feeling when we walked in that it was new, and it felt right, the atmosphere. The building, the grounds, the people, everything is great and had a good feel, so dad moved in. The caregivers have all been really helpful, attentive, readily accessible, and extremely accommodating. Management has been honest and very open, they're not at all pushy, and they create a very loving atmosphere. We're real happy with his rooms, we asked maintenance for some things before moving in and they were immediately available. So far housekeeping is excellent. He's only had the service once, but they came when they were supposed to and did everything right. My dad has gone from eating one meal a day to now eating three, and he's really enjoying the food. The servers know his name and what he likes, when he sits down they bring him the decaf coffee he likes. The activities they have available are excellent. So far, everything's been great, I'd recommend it highly.

Charlene at 14 Nov 2018:
Everyone has been really nice, really helpful and really good. My Grandmother really likes the food and the servers in the dining room are good. My Grandmother wanted bible study and they offer it so that is a good thing. Maintenance has been extremely helpful. When we met with the nurse for the assessment, she was very nice.

Betty at 14 Nov 2018:
The pricing at Almond Heights is what the market calls for and pretty fair, they aren't overpriced or underpriced at all. Management at the community is respectful, knowledgeable, and responsive and I am able to go in to knock on their door anytime. The dining experience is great, I am very pleased with the hours that they have with 7AM to 7PM because a lot of places don't do that and the service is very attentive to my mother's needs. With regards to services, I see a lot of activities being offered, they do a good job of basic housekeeping and the maintenance crew was good about explaining the thermostat to her going above and beyond, being very cordial with her. All in all, we're satisfied with the services and accommodations being provided to my mother.

Annabelle at 18 Oct 2018:
Everyone is always very friendly here. They know you by name when you come in and can usually tell me where mom is. Mom loves playing all the activities they offer. She enjoys playing bean bag baseball, watching the old movies, the arts and crafts and going on the outings. The maintenance department is quick to fix things if something is wrong. The care staff comes on schedule and are flexible when she needs to change her schedule. They seem to be in tune with that she needs and orders items as needed. I think they do a wonderful job in the accounting area. Tiffany is terrific to work with. She works with you to accomplish your goals.

Jacqueline at 15 Oct 2018:
Management is very nice and helpful at Almond Heights. The activities director keeps the residents busy with the things they want to do. My mother-in-law is very pleased with the two caregivers that she has. My mother-in-law is also very pleased with the housekeeping, she's a neat freak so her apartment always looks perfect. All in all, we are very satisfied with my mother-in-law living here.

Marcela at 09 Oct 2018:
I looked at a number of different communities and thought Almond Heights was the best fit for my mother. We've been satisfied with housekeeping and laundry, and maintenance has been great. The caregivers are respectful to my mother, and always accessible. Management has been good, they've been very helpful, very nice, and available. I think everything is good shape in the community.

Pete at 11 Sep 2018:
My son saw the building and recommended the place from previewing it. We found that the price was reasonable compared to some of the other places and it looked like it was run well. Management has kept me informed with things that are happening and are proactive. They've been communicating really well. The employees have been really helpful, the front desk and med techs have been helpful. It seems like they have a good crew there, that's their strength. The place looks great, everyone that has visited is pretty impressed with the design of it and the dining room. The healthcare staff been real helpful with the transition and everything. They make sure they get what they need and are keeping them handled. I've been really happy.

Edna at 11 Sep 2018:
My sister and I just moved our mom in because of the location, and we didn’t see any red flags. It's pretty clean, the price is comparable to other communities, and so far I like some of the caregivers. It's all still new and she's still getting acclimated.

Bob at 11 Sep 2018:
We chose the community for a combination of three things, proximity to where I live, competitive pricing. The sales staff and follow up people we worked with during the process of getting the tours and questions answered. That was one of the key points was how easy to work with they were and how helpful they were. The two people we worked with primarily were fantastic. My parents have been happy with dining overall and the maintenance guy came by to do a few things and he was very helpful. My parents are very happy with the community.

Georgia at 11 Sep 2018:
This is our first time of being in a home like this or having these services, but it feels like a good value. Management is very helpful and do the best they can as I request something, so they're accessible and responsive. The food is very good, the service is great and everything seems to be kept up nicely. She is mostly independant, but I am satisfied with the helpfulness and responsiveness of the care staff in terms of administering her medication. Overall, there have been no issues.

Martha at 06 Sep 2018:
My mother is kind of a homebody, but they have been very encouraging with her and now she gets out and plays bridge, sings in the choir and even participates when they have music with happy hour. I would say the staff her has gone above and beyond to be sure and include her. The staff at the front desk is very cordial and outgoing. The community is very well maintained. The place is spotless, it couldn't be much better. The care staff is very caring and is sure to call me if there are any questions.

Bertha at 27 Aug 2018:
It's immaculate and very nicely decorated. She especially likes the Activities Director Joe, she says he makes it a lot of fun. All of the management staff really great. My mother doesn't really need a lot of attention although she did fall a week or two ago and the aide came and checked on her so that was good. They check on her pretty often, which I appreciate.

E at 27 Aug 2018:
My mother and father have lived at this community for about 3 months. I needed a place right away for them and the management was wonderful. They were very open and welcoming. There were two places that we were down to and they were excellent in allowing both of my parents go into a two bedroom place and I thought the value was super. They were always willing to work with us with the accounting. I was thankful that they were giving her 3 meals a day because it was hard to get that at home, even now. The housekeepers were always good about getting my dad cleaned, changed and cleaning up the facility if he had any issues. I would highly recommend this community to others.

Eva at 27 Aug 2018:
My brother and I were so happy to find this community for mom. The cleanliness and all the amenities they offer didn't compare to any other community out there in our area. She had a nice room, private toilet area and a huge picture window to look out. She really loved it there and has asked to come back to Almond Heights. The service and food in dining were amazing, mom would eat all of her food because everything was delicious and healthy. The administration of the building is wonderful. The director made it a wonderful welcoming place for everyone who was there residents and visitors alike.

Warren at 22 Aug 2018:
I am very pleased with everyhting that has happened so far regarding my husband's stay. They get my husband involved. They have music and he likes that. I think the aides are very nice. The building and his room are both well maintained. He likes it and I am happy with the overall service.

Ruby at 25 Jul 2018:
Because she's high functioning they've been taking good care of my aunt and I think the price is reasonable. Dale, the maintenance guy there, has done a good job assisting my aunt and helped her with her wheelchair. I think they've been helpful and responsive. The housekeeping crew is very cooperative if we need something done. Overall, most of the staff is very good, loving and caring.

Alfred at 25 Jul 2018:
I like the management and I feel like I have a good rapport with them. Everyone is willing to help and they listen. The activities are good and I am told that my brother is participating with them all the time. I like the housekeeping staff, they're very nice people. The maintenance is very good. The healthcare is going well and I like the fact that they tend to him and make sure he has his medication. This is the best place that my brother has ever been in.

Gerard at 09 Jul 2018:
We originally went there because I was looking for respite and it was one of the places that Care.com had recommended, so we went to look at it and my father was pleased. After the tour, he didn't want to go home. The family calls it a cruise ship on land. The dining is very good, he is enjoying it. They setup furniture for him and it's been excellent. It's a wonderful team that they have there.

Barbara at 03 Jul 2018:
The caregivers here are great. They are on top of it when we run short on things. They always call me to communicate everything regarding my mom. They are very meticulous and conscious about ensuring the administration of meds is accurate, the dosage and all of that. The front desk people are great. They are just always super friendly and helpful, I appreciate that a great deal. I'd recommend it here.

Nancy at 21 Jun 2018:
It has plenty of activities, and the apartment is nice with a kitchenette and a real refrigerator. It had the most options, and seemed to be one of the more reasonably priced communities. This I always a stressful decision and everybody seemed to be really interested in making this as easy as possible. Any questions we had, the management had a good answer. I'm just very impressed and everybody has been more than kind. The service we get there has been really, really nice. It really seems like they make an effort. Since my step-mom has moved in she's fallen for the food there. She gets choices at every meal. It's like a restaurant. She's very happy with the in-house hairdresser. We're very happy with the experience so far.

Doris at 19 Jun 2018:
Overall, I'm very happy with the choice that we made. I eat over there quite often with my mom and I am always happy with the food. I think the waiters are excellent. They know all the people by their names and what they want to drink. They are all really willing to help you out. The activities are wonderful. My mom is participating more than I thought she would. The people who run the activities, Melissa and Joe, are really nice people and really great. I go to a few of the activities with my mom. The special activities that they have throughout the year are really good too. The lady that does my mom's room is super friendly and really nice. She does an okay job with the cleaning and she does my mom's sheets and towels. Her personality is fantastic and my mom really seems to enjoy her interactions with her. I think they do a really good job of keeping everything up.

Pearl at 12 Jun 2018:
Management is always friendly and they listen to my concerns. The food is pretty good and for the resident it's the right quantity. There is a nice variety of activities. The housekeeping in cleaning my mom's bed and doing her laundry is excellent. Every time I go down and mention something to maintenance, they generally go ahead and take care of it. It's fair, the price is not the highest and it's not the lowest, but the location is convenient for me.

Peggy at 12 Jun 2018:
This community seems to be the best deal. The management staff does a good job. Eddie has done a good job. The food is good. The maintenance seems fine. I am satisfied.

Doris at 10 May 2018:
The only way I could compare it is to the other facilities I checked out. It seems a very good value. It's a fair price given what we've seen. My mom feels safe. The food is pretty good and they have a lot of activities. The cleaning service has been pretty good. My mom has been ill and the caregivers have really gone in and checked on her, and tried to help her get acclimated to the different activities and had meals with her. They've just been very good. They all seem very nice and willing to help. It's beautiful; it's always kept up well. The outside is nice. The courtyard looks very pretty. It's very comfortable here.

R at 07 May 2018:
It's a fair price right now for a two bedroom apartment. Management adjusted my rent for me when I thought it was too high. They take good care of us. Management is very good here. We have an excellent chef and he's very good. Dining services and the waitresses are great. Maintenance is outstanding. As soon as I notify him, he's right there to fix whatever is wrong.

Joseph at 07 May 2018:
I think Terry is doing an outstanding job and I really enjoy her as the executive director. The care staff does care for the residents and they do care for those that have various needs. I think that is one of the strong points of the facility is the care staff. The maintenance staff makes sure anything is dealt with so the residents don't have to worry about anything working improperly. I made a note that said the washing machines weren't working and as soon as he came on board, he checked that out and found out it was a circuit in the washing machine, replaced the circuit and the washing machine was back up and running within a couple days. The management staff is willing to listen to your point of view and take what the resident has to say into consideration. The staff here at the facility, from serving staff, caregiving staff, housekeeping, maintenance, recreation, all the way across the line, the people are great.

Lenora at 09 Apr 2018:
I very much like it and looked at several places before we settled there. I knew my mom would like it. The care staff is very knowledgeable and seems like genuinely nice people who care about the patients. They're amazing. The housekeeping seems to be consistent and take care of things. It's newer and the patio area is beautiful. Last summer they had little concerts and bbq's in the back and so it's nice they have those kinds of different things for the residents.

J at 02 Apr 2018:
Courtney, the accounting director, is wonderful. My mother loves the activities. Everything is great. The art class is the best. Maintenance does a good job and the med-techs have been very good.

Wacker at 19 Mar 2018:
I think the prices are really very good. We always felt secure. We always felt in touch because they would communicate with us, and we knew that mom was well cared for. We do feel safe and comfortable with the community. We were impressed with the management team, even when the place was under construction. They were attentive, most especially, our closest contact was the first manager Chad, and he was willing to talk with us when he really needed to go to his child's birthday that was amazing. My mother enjoyed them. My wife and mom attended one of the auctions and my mom was so excited she could hardly stand it. I know that they do bowling, and trips, and the availability of transportation and vans are there, and that was one of the reasons why my wife and I chose Almond Heights for my mom. Memory Care was excellent, especially Charlotte and Karen, they were exceptional in many ways in dealing with relative difficulties. The caregivers in the apartment are so attentive, they do pay attention, they understand what medication the patients need. We were very pleased with the care that they got. The outside maintenance in the hallways, are clear. The sitting areas are available, we did eat outside and had the pleasure of eating outside under an umbrella, and it was always nice and clean. We went there several times and enjoyed the food, the service, and the wait staff. They work hard, are friendly, and communicate well.

Eva at 19 Mar 2018:
Mother has been at Almond Heights for two years. We visited several places before Almond Heights and this was the best place that we saw. You want your family to be well taken care of and given the attention they need. I know whether I'm there or not there, she's getting the care she needs. She enjoys the food there; it's like dining out at a nice restaurant. If something goes wrong like they bump themselves, the nurse calls me right away. They have their own ambulance team on the premises, so if anything goes wrong, they will rush her to the hospital and call me, and I can meet them there. That takes a lot off my mind. It relieves my mind to know that there is someone there to care for her very well all the time.

Doris at 19 Mar 2018:
They do a great job and they love my mom. The food has gotten better over the last few months. They have gotten a new chef and there seems to be a good variety. Anytime I something to bring up with the facility, I do know I can bring it up to them.

B at 19 Mar 2018:
The caregivers are great. They've always been responsive to our needs. The maintenance staff is very responsive and does a great job. The food always seems to be prepared well and I think management has been very responsive to our requests. All in all, it's been a good place for my parents.

Donna at 12 Mar 2018:
My mother was in a different place close by and did not like it there so we went and looked at a couple different places. It's very close so I stopped by and she liked it, which was huge. Everybody was extremely nice, the vibe in the building felt good, and she really likes the room that she ended up with. Everyone that I dealt with so far has been extremely nice, very helpful and knowledgeable about their jobs. The food that I have tasted so far has been very good. They've all been very nice in terms of care staff.

Jerry at 12 Mar 2018:
We had difficulty getting my father-in-law in elsewhere; it was the easiest to get into. I'm really happy they agreed to take him when we needed it and they did take it down in price. The management staff was very easy to communicate with, they got back to me in a very timely manner. I always got follow-up. I know he enjoys them and goes to a lot of the activities. I think there are a wide variety of them. Maintenance was great, he went on respite so they had to move and furnish the place. We're really happy with him being there.
