Daughter of a brand new resident

04 Apr 2019

The entire process of selecting a facility from meeting with Victoria Spencer (Sales and Marketing Director) for a tour (more than once! :) ) to moving in and ensuring my mom is adapting to her new surroundings was made smooth by all of the caring management and staff. Everyone is so kind and always smiling and friendly. The community is brand new, everything is nice and clean, with beautiful landscaping and gorgeous views. Victoria's enthusiasm is refreshing, and you can tell she truly enjoys her job. She works tirelessly to respond to questions, even after the potential resident moves in! Everyone works very hard to ensure all residents and their guests feel welcome.

Was just at their Grand Opening. Best looking building in Thousand Oaks. Food was outstanding. Already scheduled a tour for my mom. Hope they have room for her. There must have been 500 people at the opening.

The place has poor management in Thousand Oaks Ca, very high staff turnover and seems disorganized. Beautiful facility and if they change the management it has potential, but the roots of the issue are likely with ownership/ non local holding company.. very low occupancy as well.

My father was one of the first residents to move into the Memory Care area at Sage Mountain. Although the surroundings at Sage Mountain are lovely, it was a difficult and worrisome decision to move him from the home he had lived in for 35 years to assisted living memory care. He has now been there for two months. The Sage Mountain Memory Care Department exceeded my expectations regarding the care they provide to my father. First of all, the Director James Christensen is excellent and caring. He and his staff prepare programs that provide an environment where the “in the moment” atmosphere for the residents is interesting, respectful, and enthusiastic. My sister and brother agree with me that my father is communicating with the staff and other residents (and us) much better than when he first moved in. He came from an environment with very little stimulation and the Memory Care daily programs provide interesting games, talks, activities, parties, and excursions that give my father excellent in the moment experiences. The whole staff at Sage Mountain is friendly, helpful and professional; however, since I deal mainly with the Memory Care Staff, I can add that the Memory Care Staff is excellent. We are all very happy with the care our father receives. Finally, one thing I must mention that I did not expect, was the effort that the staff provides to the families of the residents. Transitioning is almost as difficult for the family as for the resident, and I believe James and the other staff spend as much time communicating with the family about the residents’ needs and also help the family to understand their loved ones’ process of being comfortable at memory care and in a new environment. I have received many telephone calls and emails, and if you consider this care and attention to each resident by the number of residents, it requires effort above and beyond. We are truly very happy that our father is living at Sage Mountain Memory Care.

Our experience at Sage Mountain has been inspiring. First of all, there is emphasis on Memory support, which is not the same as memory care. The word “support” denotes an active attitude toward the guests vs. a passive one. An emphasis on being in the moment, which has become a bit of a cliche lately, is a real thing at Sage Mountain. Led by James and his team, the guests are treated as individuals with individual needs and consideration. Sincere affection is obvious to any observer. One of the primary secrets to success with the members of Memory Support is the ability to redirect guests who may be confused, agitated, or simply scared. The Alzheimer's Association teaches us that our loved ones with dementia are always afraid. Reassurance and a sincere caring attitude addresses this factor at all times. Plans for activities are followed all day every day. Including all levels of participation is encouraged. We have been amazed at the educational opportunities, including lectures, reading aloud, as well as fun games. movies, happy hour several times a week, a meal out in the community every Friday, ice cream or cookie socials, and professional performers who sing, dance, and include all of us. My husband who resides at Sage Mountain is adapting to his environment and considers the staff part of his family and Sage Mountain to be his home. We are very happy to have found Sage Mountain at this difficult time in our lives.

My aunt was diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer’s disease approximately seven years ago. Sage Mountain is the 6th facility/care home that she has lived in since her diagnosis and the first that is delivering on their promises. The Sage Mountain Memory Care unit has a very positive and caring atmosphere. The staff interact with the residents in a kind and upbeat manner and provide care that is appropriate to the specific residents needs. There are always activities and the television is not used as an activity! My aunt had been wheelchair bound for the past year, but James and the staff now have her walking. She’s slow, but they take the time to have walk from the living room to the dining room, which astonished me. The facility is beautiful and nicely decorated, but more importantly, it is clean and has a homey feel. The staff treat my aunt like she is a very important member of the community and while her dementia is more advanced than some other residents I can tell she is happy. This allows me to go to work and do personal activities knowing that she is well taken care of.

When my client first arrived at Sage Mountain, all he could talk about is “when am I going home?” or “who are all these people here? I didn’t know how to answer his questions, so I simply deflected to say his doctor hasn’t told me yet & the people are here to help you. I hadn’t received the “official diagnosis” but I already knew that he would never be able to live on his own again. To my pleasant surprise, within a very short period of time in your memory unit, my client does not ask the questions he previously did. All he talks about now is how “nice it is to live here” & “how friendly everyone is here”. Unfortunately I’ve had to visit many memory units over the past several decades involving friends & associates, but never have I experienced the upbeat, friendly, attentive all wrapped up in an extremely professional environment that I see in your memory unit at Sage Mountain. I’ve already & will continue to recommend Sage Mountain to friends & associates. Thank you for all you do for my client & the other residents!

I love Sage Mountain! I gave up my corporate career of 15 years to be here with the residents as a caregiver. I'll gladly wake up everyday at 430am to care and love our residents, and am so happy I made this change.

My experience with Sage Mountain thus far has been stellar. The staff is warm and welcoming, the facility is beautiful as well as functional, and the food I have sampled has been excellent. At this point, I walk in and everyone treats me like family. I have had misgivings about placing my husband, thinking that it might be too soon, and a staff member took the time to listen and discuss my options and concerns without pushing me into accepting placement before I was ready. The activities director has already planned some customized activities to meet my husband's needs. Memory support, including physical support and safely, as well as the "In The Moment" philosophy employed at Sage is exactly what I had hoped to find for my husband and I know I can feel secure while he is there.
