I was Personal Assistant to my bf's (in 2013) now my hubby's Dad from 2013 -2021; from when he was in Independent Living, to Assisted Living and finally in Skilled Nursing. My observations were derived from my weekly visits and ourSunday brunches with him that all stopped at the onset of Covid. 1. A housekeeper was fired because she stole cash from Dad's wallet or pockets, while he didn't spend a penny in the faciliy. Even his haircuts and nails service were charged to his room. This case was hard to prove until she accepted a $1000 check (with a duplicate copy) from him where she wrote her name as payee. Since I was the one who reported, the tail light of my car was broken one day, and a tire was punctured to cause a flat, another day! 2. When he was moved to Assisted Living he started with $178 in his wallet which was reduced to a $5 bill. Then we were told to have Paul in Accounting to hold his money and all his cards. 3.Still at Assisted Living, a common cold progressed to whooping cough, worsened to pneumonia in a 2 week period. The residents there get a weekly visit by the doctor hired by the facility and also a Practical Nurse. On our visits every Sunday, I checked with the Front Desk or Receptionist what had been done for him, I was even told that we can give him cough drops. We asked if we could go out of town while he was battling with cough, they said go ahead. Assisted Living called us in Florida to inform us that Dad will be transferred to Summerlin Hospital. I called Las Ventanas Executive Director then to let her know that if Dad passed away from pneumonia, she would read it in the Las Vegas Review Journal. 4. We gifted Dad over the years shirts and clothes from Joseph Banks; his older clothes were gifted by his late wife, also from expensive stores. He lost nice shirts and sweaters, even his flannel blankets. We couldn't pinpoint who stole them; caregivers went in and out of his room; they have a mixed residents laundry system. Until I took care of his laundry. He passed away on Jan 17, 2021 during the Pandemic, in Summerlin Hospital. When we picked up his belongings, 90% of his good shirts , even those we bought from our trips were GONE!!! His wheelchair provided by his insurance and paid $500 for, DISAPPERED!!! 5. Earlier in Skilled Nursing we suggested to change the carpet in his room to laminate. We got a quote for over $6000 for the itty bitty room, which we just passed. Because we changed the floor of our master's bedroom and the hallway in our residence, and we spent $2600 total for materials and labor! Then the New Director approved to renovate certain rooms complete with a new television set. After 3 rooms were completed, the project was halted! I believe poor training of its Staff, mostly housekeepers, laundry staff and caregivers result to these very unpleasant observations; coupled with lack of salary/fringe benefits upgrade. Remember the residents are in the stage of their lives where memory is fading or has faded and gone, and could easily be taken advantage of. Las Ventanas is maintained to look very sharp and built to accommodate the needs of its community. The social activities are many! BUT ITS AGED RESIDENTS DESERVE FAR BETTER!!!

I toured Las Ventanas Retirement Community. It's a much older building than the others I've toured but it's a beautiful building. The ambiance is different, it's like you're walking into an older country club. The furniture was wing chairs and the colors were darker. It was elegant, but it's an entirely different look. I had lunch there and the food was very good, it was excellent. Everyone I met there was very friendly and nice. Their apartments were about the same size as the other places I've toured. I was looking at their 2-bedroom apartments or 1-bedroom and a den. They all had balconies and the views varied. Some face parking and some face mountains, the view depends on what's available. Some courtyards had nice views as well. The staff here seemed excellent.
