My father was at Momentum at South Bay on and off over the last 5 months. The Rehab Department (all the OT''s, PT''s and their supervisors are terrific). The problem is the rest of the place. They are clearly understaffed and cannot respond to patients'' needs in a timely fashion. They are spending money sprucing up the parts of the building that are more outward facing, while the patient rooms are from the 1970s. While my father was there buckets of *hot* water had to brought upstairs for them to use. His last room was at the end of a hall. There is almost no water pressure. He and his roommate agreed that the aides, "Throw you around like a sack of potatoes." They insist on putting a diaper on patients because it is easier for the staff. And when patients ask for help to the toilet they are told to, "Just go in your diaper, I''ll clean it up later!" One time my father was left with his diaper halfway down his leg, no pants on and the aide said, "I''ll be right back" and disappeared. I had to call the nursing staff to get someone to finish dressing him. My father was an amputee (the amputee PT/OT team is terrific). However...his original amputation had to be redone because within a week of being at Momentum post-surgery the wound became infected!! They had to amputate another piece of bone and re-do the wound, setting him far back on being able to be fitted for a prosthetic. Then, on the evening of his discharge we discovered that no one had dressed his wound that day!! There was nothing on it! A (still open) amputation wound, with just long sweatpants on!!! We met other families who were horrified by the treatment their loved ones received. There are a couple of caring, experienced nurses, but they are clearly overworked. The social work department is very difficult to reach, so they do not communicate well with families. Medicare has received many bills from many doctors and professionals who supposedly took care of my father while he was at Momentum. He is not aware of who most of these people are, and what they did, if anything. I would suggest that Medicare do an investigation into billing practices there. Oh, and nothing much happens on weekends. Very little PT/OT with substitutes, not regular staff. The activities folks are caring and do try to engage patients.
