My stepfather Harry went to the Heim, when we could no longer give him the care he needed and deserved. Harry was in rehab at first and then was moved to skilled nursing. Staffing was an issue prior to Covid. Covid simply made the staff more broken. Physically and psychologically. During Covid, certain admin and nurse managers would not come to round on the floor due to fright and/or health conditions. Instead of "we''re in this together" .....it was more "we will dictate and act like tyrants from our office". The most hilariously frustrating part of that was the "illegitimate infection control nurse" hid in her office as well. Staff with health concerns were dismissed by admin...from their cozy office.... We were basically canaries in a coal mine. PPE shortage + working for a frugal county = reusing cheap PPE. ( We wore trash bags and dietary aprons when we ran out of PPE gowns). When your PPE fell apart after you were forced to reuse it, the nursing office treated you as though you were a second class citizen if you darkened their doorway to request a replacement. Mandation was brutal and primarily occured on 3-11. Dayshift is always favored, therefore rarely mandated, leaving 3-11 short staffed, overworked, underpaid and ontop of that, mandated. 16 hours in full PPE at Berks Heim was pure torture. Two nightshift supervisors treated the CNAs like animals. They micromanaged from their office while one made Tiktoks on company time. CNAs were basically segregated from the nurses themselves. They were not permitted to sit down at the desk and chart for ten minutes. One CNA to 30 residents is pretty much next to impossible to provide good care for the circumstances. The charge nurse was responsible for passing medications and treatments for 30 residents as well as help the one CNA for that hallway and do the Charge responsibilities ( i.e. assessments, charting, medicare charting, incident reports, contacting the doctor etc) . Then you were expected to stop everything you were doing to call and give report to the managers that refused to come to the floor. I honestly could go on and on. I haven''t even spoken about BH prior to Covid. This facility is a trainwreck. You definitely work for that pension, often times putting your nursing license in jeopardy. The UNION IS A JOKE!

This place is SHADY! Admin is cold and unpersonable. You are extremely over-worked here. The residents don''t get NEAR the care they deserve. Many staff members who work here are miserable and rude. You get lots of paid days off but it''s like pulling teeth to use them. TERRIBLE place to work!
