Unfortunately, Sedgwick Plaza residents may not use their Medicare coverage to pay for assisted living. While Medicare and many private health insurance plans will not pay for assisted living, individuals who previously served in the military may benefit from the Department of Veterans' Affairs' (VA) Aid and Attendance Benefit. Those who are eligible for the Aid and Attendance Benefit may receive a monthly stipend to pay for long-term care, including non-medical assisted living.

The Aid and Attendance benefit is paid in conjunction with a person's monthly VA pension and Social Security benefits to offset the costs of long-term care. To receive the award, a person must have honorable military service of at least 90 days; at least one day of service must take place during times of war, although recipients are not required to have seen combat, sustained an injury, or left the U.S. for deployment.

Recipients must need assistance with their daily living tasks to receive Aid and Attendance. For more information about the benefit's specific requirements, veterans should contact their VA caseworker.

I am extremely pleased with the staff at Sedgwick Plaza. They were very comforting to my Mom In making her feel welcomed in the beginning and continues to make her feel like family. Whenever Mom needs something, they are there, if just an encouraging word, help with getting a shirt on or just someone to listen. Mom has also made many new friends and feels they have so much in common. Having Mom there has been such a comfort and sense of security for me. I know she is in a safe, caring and uplifting environment. I couldn’t ask for more!

My mother has been in assisted living at Sedwick Plaza for about 13 months. She is in a studio apartment that suits her very well. One of the things we’ve noticed and really appreciate is how well the apartments are sound insulated. Neighbor noise is almost nonexistent; we’ve almost never heard so much as a peep through the walls. She is delighted with the staff. The nurses and administration people and other staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. She doesn’t participate in activities as a rule, because most activities require at least some visual acuity, and her eyesight is fading rapidly due to macular degeneration. The transportation service is much appreciated. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, she is able to get rides to and from appointments, which is a great help to her kids and grandkids, who would have to be her ride otherwise. We are all very happy that she is in such a good place.

My 92 year old mother loves living at SP and is especially positive about the aids who help her with Assisted Living. Mom has good things to say about the staff and says they treat her with respect. She really enjoys listening to those who play the piano and her visits with other residents in the library. She is happy that they have a church service each Sunday where she can hear the word of God. Thank you SP for making my mother’s transition from living in her own home much easier.
