Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I know if the Highlands assisted living community is right for me?

The Highlands' services are for families and individuals who want to enjoy a comfortable life with the security of around-the-clock care
The Highlands' residential care services are exclusively non-medical, unlike a nursing home or skilled nursing facility. Their staff assist residents with activities of daily living like showering, dressing, and eating. They are not licensed to provide ongoing medical attention.
Potential residents can ask themselves a few simple questions to find out if the Highlands is a suitable choice:
  • Is the resident mobile?
  • Does the resident have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or short-term memory loss?
  • Does the resident need ongoing medical attention?
Although the Highlands' staff members help residents move throughout the community as-needed, they are not equipped to help people who are permanently confined to their beds. The same principle applies to people who need ongoing medical attention: the community does not offer skilled nursing care and is not a suitable alternative for people who need it.
However, residents with Alzheimer’s are welcome at the Highlands, thanks to their specialized memory care program. Their memory care community offers long-term care services tailored for residents living with dementia, creating a secure environment for them to live and thrive.
To learn more about the Highlands' personal care or memory care services, use the link above to make an inquiry.

Q: Do the Highlands offer short-term care services or respite care for individuals who typically receive in-home care?

Yes! The Highlands offer respite care for individuals who need temporary caregivers while theirs is unavailable to help. Respite care residents can stay temporarily, enjoying a fully-furnished room and all of the community's exceptional amenities, including a restaurant-style dining experience. To learn more, use the link above to make an inquiry.

Q: How much does it cost to live in one of the homes at the Highlands?

The Highlands does not charge a flat rate for their independent living, assisted living, or memory care programs. Instead, they charge a base monthly rental fee that includes each person’s room and board, dining, and weekly housekeeping. Rent also pays for access to on-site amenities, like the fitness center and the heated indoor swimming pool.
Fees are added for any additional services a person needs. Base monthly rent prices depend on a person’s preferred apartment and their care needs. Some floor plans may cost more per month than others, depending on how many square feet an apartment measures.

The community is located near the city, giving residents easy access to one-of-a-kind dining and shopping experiences. Residents are welcome to use the community's complimentary transportation program to take advantage of the many opportunities throughout Topsham.
For more information about local points of interest in close proximity to the Highlands, please use the link above to make an inquiry.

Q: What are the differences between independent living, assisted living, and memory care units at the Highlands?

At the Highlands, independent and assisted living apartments are similar. They each offer one or more private bedrooms and private bathrooms, with spacious closets for residents to store their belongings. Each independent and assisted living apartment has a kitchen, complete with refrigeration and cooking appliances.
The memory care apartments are specially designed with residents in mind. Living with Alzheimer's can mean a person is more susceptible to overstimulation and confusion - it's important they live in an environment that minimizes anything disorienting.
Memory care apartments are studio-style suitesdesigned to help residents navigate with ease. Each unit has a private bathroom but does not feature a kitchen

My wife and I love our Highlands home! It's so well laid-out and perfectly fits our life style. We also greatly appreciate the lovely landscaping around our house and the care with which it is maintained. We received great support from the marketing team during our many house visits and subsequent negotiations to purchase our home; and we have been warmly welcomed by our fellow Highlands residents ever since our arrival in November 2018. Finally, I must add that the services delivered by Highlands staff--from management to maintenance to wellness, dining to fitness--is both impressive and caring.

We just moved in on November 14, but our life here so far has been wonderful. Because we essentially still live in the same general vicinity that we lived in before, we have not yet been involved in many activities. My first activity was the lobster feast, right in our back yard. The welcome reception was more than I expected, with introductions by Ann and Bob Williams. This gave me an opportunity to meet most everyone in the co-op. Our neighbors have been very very welcoming and kind. They have been helpful whenever we asked for information, suggestions or small favors. The staff has also been terrific! I have yet to meet someone who wasn't a good person: Chelsie, Jennalee, Sharon, Tracy, Chris, Amy, Kathy, Brenda, Angela, Lisa, Janice, Amanda, Eleonor, Amanda, Melinda, etc. -- all wonderful! As for the house we live in, we are very lucky in that it is an open concept and one of the larger homes. But before choosing this one we saw at least 10 others - with slightly different layouts, different floors, kitchens, and settings. I really appreciate that we have someone who comes in and cleans every two weeks. I also like the fact that the driveways, streets and sidewalks are plowed, usually before you get up in the winter. And, in the summer, that the shrubbery and lawns are cared for (despite the loud noises of some of the machinery.) I like the fact that there is a lot of woods in the area and that it has different terrains. We came from woods and water and I miss that immersion, so I appreciate what is here. I like the walking trails and the fact we can order dinner to be delivered if we want, plus the movies that I have taken advantage of. I appreciate the fact there are back up facilities in case of need. All in all, so far this has been a very positive experience.

Thanks for this opportunity to lend credence to the publications of the Highlands! Both professionally and personally I have traveled many places here and abroad and been in contact with many different individuals. What has pleased me the most here is the friendliness and intelligence of the associates and fellow residents. It is a joy to interact with the folks here. I really believe that we are all in this world together... we are either going to fly together or sink together. When we are working and playing together, we realize that life, existence, thought, and action are so much easier. Here is the realization that when we help each other, we help ourselves!
